Yesterday, we reported on US president Joe Biden’s announcement of plans to ‘hold social media platforms accountable’ for protecting children who are using their services. Now a group of attorneys general are getting in on the act.
Led by Massachusetts AG Maura Healey, they have launched an investigation into “whether TikTok is designing, operating, and promoting its social media platform to children, teens, and young adults in a manner that causes or exacerbates physical and mental health harms”.
Their probe will include looking at “the methods and techniques utilised by TikTok to boost young user engagement, including increasing the duration of time spent on the platform and frequency of engagement with the platform”. This is an area of interest for Healey: in November 2021 she kicked off a similar investigation of Meta focusing on Instagram’s use by children.
