NFT sceptics worry about whether the boom in all things non-fungible is mainly rewarding a fairly narrow circle of crypto bros. Here’s an encouraging example of an NFT whose attention is directed elsewhere.
It’s an NFT of the Ukrainian flag, which had raised $6.7m (and counting) by this week to aid the country’s defence. The NFT was sold by an organisation called UkraineDAO, backed by Nadya Tolokonnikova of music and activism group Pussy Riot. People could buy a share in the NFT, with more than 3,200 contributing in 72 hours according to CNN.
“Revolution could not be achieved with conventional currencies, there are too many ways for traditional funds to be intercepted by traditional institutions, governments, other factions with intent to control, harm, simply shift funds without transparency,” is how Pussy Riot’s Twitter account described the strategy behind it.
