We like to keep an eye on trends and growth in the video streaming market, as a comparison to the music streaming world. If you do too, the latest report from industry body the Motion Picture Association (MPA) is worth a look.

It offers figures from the 2021 market for theatrical (cinema), home and mobile entertainment in the video world. The biggest figure being 1.3bn. That’s how many online video subscriptions there were at the end of 2021, up 14% year-on-year.

We don’t have the comparable music-streaming figure for 2021 yet: that’s coming next week in the IFPI’s annual report. However, in 2020 there were 443 million users of paid music streaming subscriptions according to that body.

Note the difference in emphasis here: the MPA is counting subscriptions while the IFPI is counting people.

But the difference between these two figures also illustrates the way people are more likely to use two or more paid video streaming services – not least because they don’t all have the same catalogue of TV shows and films – than they are paid music streaming services.
