CMA officially clears Sony Music’s acquisition of AWAL

UK competition regulator the CMA has officially cleared Sony Music’s acquisition of AWAL, following its provisional approval of the deal in February.

Companies and industry bodies had been invited to submit their views on that provisional ruling by 4 March, which the CMA then considered in reaching its final decision.

“Having carefully assessed the merger we found that it is not likely to affect competition in a way that will reduce the choice or quality of recorded music available or increase prices,” said Margot Daly, who chaired the independent CMA Inquiry Group that reached the decision.

You can read the observations submitted following the provisional ruling from Sony Music here, and from independent body Impala here. Clearly the former won over the regulatory group to its arguments.
