Artist Joel ‘deadmau5’ Zimmerman is all-in on the metaverse. In the last two years alone he’s played to fans in Fortnite; co-founded ‘direct-to-avatar’ startup Pixelynx with fellow musician Richie ‘Plastikman’ Hawtin; bought virtual land in blockchain-powered world The Sandbox; and built his own Oberhasli world on gaming platform Core. Now he putting his money into another metaverse startup called Oorbit.

Zimmerman (via Pixelynx) is one of the investors in a $5m seed round for the startup alongside entrepreneur Mark Cuban and investment firm HOF Capital. Oorbit is building a platform that will encompass (in its words) “virtual games, entertainment, events, creative spaces, and much more” with blockchain, NFTs, fintech and cloud streaming part of the package too.

“We are combining the best parts of these complex technologies to enable episodic entertainment that is not just incredible but also approachable, for all audiences,” said CEO Ash Koosha. If his name rings a bell, that’s because Koosha is an artist who released albums through Ninja Tune, and previously the founder of Auxuman, a startup that blended virtual artists with AI-generated music which we covered in 2019.
