As the major labels step up their activities in China, they’re keen to start bringing more artists from that country to global attention. Collaborations are going to play a key role in that, which is why we’re writing about James Blunt this morning.

Blunt is releasing a new version of his track ‘Adrenaline’ with the addition of Chinese star Jason Zhang. The announcement emphasises “a true partnership between the artists and a musical meeting of minds” but Atlantic Records UK’s VP of A&R Paul Samuels spelled out the commercial thinking behind the collaboration.

“Jason is an accomplished artist. This track allows him to build his presence across the globe, giving fans who might not have known about him the opportunity to discover his talent. For James, who has already established a strong presence in China, the track provides an exciting offering for his growing fan base in the region.”

We expect to see much more of this in the months ahead as the majors identify more Chinese artists who could suit these kinds of collaborations.
