Led by former UMG digital boss Rob Wells, Orfium has been quietly building a business based on technology to help rightsholders track usage of their music and collect royalties from licensees. Now it’s expanding geographically with an acquisition in Japan.

Orfium has bought Breaker Inc, a company whose business is part influencer-marketing agency and part YouTube multi-channel network. Rebranded as Orfium Japan, the company will now be pitching Orfium’s technology to its existing partners, as well as looking for new clients “across music, gaming, entertainment and anime”.

The deal is part of a wider trend that is seeing companies focusing on back-end technology to help music companies track rights and identify new royalty streams (see also: Utopia Music) using acquisitions as a fast-track to expansion of their teams and businesses.
