US firm Vnue is launching a new version of Soundstr, the B2B music identification technology it acquired in 2018. It’s also had a tweak to its branding, and is now called the Soundstr Music Data Market (MDM for short).
The product itself is a mixture of hardware – a device installed in live music venues and other places where music is played – and a service that identifies music and gathers the data for interested parties. Collecting societies most obviously, but also labels and publishers, venue owners, radio firms and artists themselves.
The key feature, according to Vnue, is that Soundstr MDM can identify music played in live performances, rather than just recordings. The news comes shortly after Vnue relaunched another of its acquisitions, livestreaming startup StageIt, with new management and the settlement of several debts. However, the company also noted that 90% of StageIt’s staff were laid off before the completion of the acquisition.
