The latest major-label move in India is from WMG, via a partnership between its Warner Music India subsidiary and film-music label Jjust Music.
It’s WMI’s first move into Bollywood music, working with the company founded by actor and producer Jackky Bhangnani in 2019.
Their first joint release will be an English-language track from actor Tiger Shroff. “Jackky has brought energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial flare to the Indian music market and he’s just the sort of person we love to work with,” said WMG’s president, emerging markets, Warner Recorded Music Alfonso Perez-Soto.
It’s part of a wave of activity by the global majors in India, and for WMG follows the launch of an Indian folk-music label called Maati in October 2021.
UMG, meanwhile, has recently expanded its VYRL Originals non-film music arm, launched an Indian office for its Ingrooves distribution subsidiary, and debuted a Def Jam India imprint. Sony Music also recently launched a new sub-label in India focusing on ‘new-age pop’.
