The music industry knows Andre Benz best as the founder of YouTube music channel Trap Nation, which over time expanded into a company called The Nations with a raft of curatorial channels and brands. His latest venture is also music-related, but this time NFTs are the focus. SoundMint is described as “a generative platform for music NFTs” in the announcement of its $1.7m seed funding round. That round was led by Animoca Brands, one of the emerging key players in blockchain gaming, including owning NFT-infused virtual world The Sandbox. SoundMint wants to get artists creating NFTs using audio stems that can be algorithmically mixed together to make unique pieces of music. The company says its first project, with musician Kloud and visual artist Hooker, sold 5,000 NFTs for a total value of $2.5m. The funding will partly be used to launch SoundMint’s own NFTs marketplace.
