But while most recent efforts around higher-quality music have focused on streaming, producer T Bone Burnett is working on a brand new hi-res physical format through his company NeoFidelity. “It is lacquer painted onto an aluminum disc, with a spiral etched into it by music.
This painting, however, has the additional quality of containing that music, which can be heard by putting a stylus into the spiral and spinning it,” said Burnett in a statement. Who’s the first painter on board? Bob Dylan. Dylan has been re-recording some of his classic tracks to help kick off NeoFidelity’s series of ‘Ionic Originals’. That may furrow the brows of anyone who’s seen Dylan’s, how shall we put this, enigmatic approach to performing some of those classics live in recent decades. Still, Burnett has been a longtime advocate for better sound quality, so his new format could be interesting.
