Midia Research teamed up with TuneCore and Believe this year for a second ‘Be The Change’ report exploring the challenges faced by women in the music industry.

The topline finding: “A sobering picture emerges of lack of real change since 2021, and little progress with the challenges that women face,” according to Midia.

There are bright spots: 40% of women surveyed for the study said that the visibility of women at music events and conferences has improved since 2021, for example, while 36% saw progress in the diversity of women in executive roles and positions of power.

However, 57% thought challenges of sexual harassment and objectification have stayed the same in the last year (and 11% said they had worsened) while 56% thought that both sexualisation and ageism towards women had stayed the same.

“Equality is quality. While it’s encouraging to see that the visibility of women in the music industry has improved in the last year, we still have a long way to go to bridge the diversity gap,” said TuneCore CEO Andreea Gleeson.
