A study conducted by a group of Finnish music industry bodies has quantified the scale of harassment and inappropriate behaviour within the industry.
1,012 artists and industry folk answered a survey, with 76% of them saying they have experienced inappropriate behaviour – including 84% of women, and 98% of 20-25 year-olds. This covers a range of things: inappropriate comments, sexual harassment, but also exclusion from informal discussions at work, and pay inequities.
“It is clear that there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of equality in the industry and the prevention of misconduct. Fortunately, in many ways, the industry is already catching up,” said Sanni Kahilainen, communications manager at the Finnish Musicians’ Association. “Information and tools are there and more are being done – now is the time to put them in place, and we all need to do that.”
