Famously the site where Lil Nas X bought the $30 trap beat he used in ‘Old Town Road’, BeatStars has continued to grow its business selling beats and sounds to producers and artists. This past weekend it revealed its latest milestone: $200m of payouts to the creators of that music.
That’s a decent step on from the $50m payouts mark it reached in June 2019. Since then, the company has also expanded the scope of its business beyond simply selling beats. In July 2020 it added a distribution arm to help musicians release their full tracks, then a year later it also moved into music publishing via a partnership with Sony Music.
It’s been a slow and steady build for the company, which launched its marketplace back in 2008. It now has more than three million active people in its community.
