The merry-go-round of social / tech firms nabbing one another’s popular features goes on.

Snapchat’s Bitmoji avatars have been a big hit ever since it bought the startup behind them for more than $100m in 2016. Then Apple offered its own spin on the idea with its Memoji in 2018.

Now TikTok is getting in on the action with the launch of ‘TikTok Avatars‘. It’s very much inspired by those two other companies, with TikTok users able to create their cartoon characters, then record videos with the avatar mimicking their words and motions.

The new feature is launching as part of TikTok’s ‘effects’ library, with a big focus on inclusivity: “From outfits to skin tones and hair color down to texture, building inclusive features and experiences remains our priority,” promised TikTok.

Expect to see a lot of these avatars in the days ahead as creators latch on to the feature – musicians included.
