Spotify has announced its latest acquisition: UK-based startup Sonantic, which has developed text-to-speech technology capable of generating (in its words) “compelling, lifelike performances with fully expressive AI-generated voices”.
The countdown to Joe Rogan being replaced by a sentient AI begins here! Or perhaps not.
Spotify says it has some other ideas for deploying the technology. “We believe that over the long term, high-quality voice will be important to growing our share of listening,” said the company in a blog post.
“For example, this voice technology could allow us to give context to users about upcoming recommendations when they aren’t looking at their screens.”
TechCrunch pointed out that Sonantic had a burgeoning business working with games developers, but that it’s unclear whether that will continue under its new owner.
