Synchtank won plenty of friends with its ‘Drowning in Data’ industry report last year, and now it has kicked off a new four-part series focusing on publishing.

‘Music Publishing in the Age of the Songwriter’ will be based on interviews with the likes of Björn Ulvaeus, Carianne Marshall, Jon Platt, Mary Megan Peer, Merck Mercuriadis and Nile Rodgers, which should yield some punchy content in the third part ,which will focus on the economics of streaming.

For now, the first part is available, looking at the evolution of music publishing thus far, including booming catalogue sales; the different kinds of publishers; the investment in software, staff and infrastructure; and the evolution of what songwriters need from these companies.

“Entrepreneurship is a much bigger part of young people’s lives these days than it was in the past and how songwriters are becoming more entrepreneurial,” as Downtown Music Services’ Mike Smith puts it.
