Last week we reported on plans for a Backstreet Boys concert livestream on messaging app WeChat, and hopes that it might reach 40 million viewers. Well, the event surpassed those expectations as it turned out.

Executive producer East Goes Global tells Music Ally that 44.2 million fans tuned in to the performance, smashing the 28 million figure achieved by Westlife in a previous WeChat livestream.

Not that the Irish group will be feeling too sore: they took part in the Backstreet Boys event too. East Goes Global worked with 24/7 Productions on the event, while Music Ally understands that livestreaming promoter Driift was also involved as co-producer.

According to East Goes Global, the duet between the two groups at the latest livestream is currently the top trending topic in China (in terms of measurable social buzz on WeChat, we’re assuming).
