Spotify’s Anchor podcast-making app has become a key source of new shows on the service: 85% of them, to be precise. However, Spotify is now testing an alternative way to record and upload podcasts: from within its main app.

TechCrunch has the details on the test, which is currently taking place in New Zealand. From a video posted by the Spotify New Zealand Twitter account, it looks like the feature also includes Spotify’s ‘Music + Talk’ functionality to add music tracks from its catalogue to podcasts.

If it goes beyond a test, it will be a notable move by Spotify to further open up podcasting beyond professional producers – essentially making it as easy to record a show as it is to create a playlist in its app.

That in turn may bring challenges: for example the sheer noise of a wave of amateur podcasts surging onto the platform.
