The surround-sound Dolby Atmos format has been making strides in the west thanks to its use by Apple Music and Amazon Music, among other streaming services. Now it’s making inroads into China too.
Tencent Music’s QQ Music streaming service has just adopted the format, becoming the first domestic Chinese DSP to do so. A catalogue of Dolby Atmos music will now be available to QQ Music’s ‘SVIP’ subscribers, including a mixture of Chinese and international artists.
There are some restrictions: to listen to the catalogue, subscribers will need an Android smartphone that supports Dolby Atmos, although Dolby noted in its announcement that this includes handsets made by a range of manufacturers including Samsung, Lenovo and Xiaomi.
