Lofi Girl is the lo-fi hip-hop music brand that reached the milestone of 10 million YouTube subscribers earlier this year. The company, formerly known as ChilledCow, has amassed plenty of listeners for its two round-the-clock YouTube streams: ‘beats to relax/study to’ and ‘beats to sleep/chill to’.

Until this week, that is, when the streams were abruptly taken down by YouTube due to a copyright complaint.

Yesterday, Lofi Girl provided an update on the situation. “The strike was retracted earlier today, however the livestreams have since been taken down entirely and not yet reinstated in their original form,” tweeted its official account.

“We’re shocked and disappointed to see that there’s still not any kind of protection or manual review of these false claims. At the end of the day, it was entirely out of our control, and the sad part is that there was no way to appeal beforehand/prevent it from happening.”

A message on Twitter from YouTube’s official support account to Lofi Girl warned that while the videos have been reinstated “it can sometimes take 24-48 hours for everything to be back to normal”. That tweet also confirmed that “the takedown requests were abusive” adding that the claimant’s account had been terminated.
