MENA music service Anghami has announced some changes to its chart algorithms.

The company’s rankings will now include older tracks that have been given a new boost by social media and other sources, rather than focusing on frontline tracks.

Another change is a tweak to the way Anghami ranks the popularity of tracks. “Issued daily every morning, they’re now based on total plays of the previous day, not on unique users, and capped at 100 plays per user,” explained CTO Elie Habib. Anghami says that the change is about not confusing superfans playing a track over and over again (a good thing!) with attempts to fraudulently boost streams of a track (a bad thing!).

Besides the daily charts, the new algorithm will also be used for Anghami’s weekly chart, which is published on Mondays.
