Well, by ‘leaf’ we mean ‘all of its pages’ really. BeReal is one of the more original new ideas in social media at the moment. It’s an app that pings its users once a day with a short-notice deadline to capture and share a photo mixing their phone’s front camera (to show their face) and rear camera (to show what they’re doing/seeing). These photos are only shared with their friends rather than the wider world.

Now meet TikTok Now, a new feature on TikTok with a daily prompt that “invites you and your friends to capture what you’re doing in the moment using your device’s front and back camera”. The main iteration on BeReal is that it can be a 10-second video or a photo. The new feature is launching within TikTok in the US, but may be a standalone app elsewhere in the world.

The inspiration is clear, then, and it’s part of an ongoing social-media trend where as soon as an app creates buzz (which BeReal certainly has) established platforms scramble to copy it. Usually TikTok has been in the position of buzzy disrupter in this dynamic, but now the boot is on the other foot.
