Music Ally doesn’t tend to cover that many ‘artist X signs to label Y’ stories unless they reflect a wider trend. That’s the case with Capitol Music Group’s latest signing though: Japanese boy-band Travis Japan. Capitol will be the home for their first global release on 28 October.
They’re not a new band, having been formed in 2017 under the auspices of Japanese entertainment firm Johnny & Associates. They also have a certain amount of profile in the US already, thanks to a barnstorming performance on TV contest America’s Got Talent earlier this year.
So, the wider trend: a bet by Capitol that this initial success can now grow into the latest breakthrough for J-Pop in the US and globally.
Our colleagues at Music Ally Japan tell us that the signing is big news in Japan this morning: let’s see if they can help J-Pop to grow its western audience and follow what’s been happening with K-Pop through the likes of BTS and Blackpink.
