Popular chat platform Discord has announced some new features which will be relevant for artists building communities there, as well as for how music is experienced more widely on it.

One of the new features is called Activities, described as “a way to instantly enjoy shared experiences with friends, such as games and media, on Discord itself”. At launch there are two activities for Discord’s free users. Putt Party is a mini-golf game, but Watch Together is most interesting from a Music Ally perspective. It’s a co-viewing feature for friends to watch YouTube videos and chat about them at the same time.

You may remember that in 2021, YouTube shut down two music-streaming Discord bots (Groovy and Rhythm) which got their music from its service.

In other news, Discord has introduced a new tier for its Nitro subscription, through which people can pay to get access to extra features on the platform. That costs $9.99 a month currently, but the new Nitro Basic tier will cost $2.99 a month, albeit with a restricted selection of the premium features (e.g. custom emoji and stickers, more space to share files, and a profile badge).
