Moroccan-Canadian streamer Imane ‘Pokimane’ Anys is one of the biggest Twitch stars, with 9.3 million followers there. Now Spotify has turned to her for its latest promotion.
Anys has created a playlist called ‘Poki’s Picks’ which is being promoted on Spotify’s homepage, with news site Dexerto noting that it features genres including future funk, hip-hop and J-Pop, as well as tracks from fellow influencers Bella Poarch and Nessa Barrett.
The playlist is published by Spotify rather than by an official Pokimane account, and at the time of writing has just over 15k likes (curiously, much less than half the number of likes her tweet announcing it has received, although obviously not everyone uses Spotify). For that tweet, Anys spoofed the famous Lo-Fi Girl animation (girl, headphones, laptop, cat – you know the one).
A penny for the thoughts of the official Lofi Girl brand, which has 1.3 million followers on Spotify already. But the broader point is Spotify tapping an influencer to create one of its ‘in-house’ (or rather, own-brand) playlists alongside those made by its own editors and algorithms.
