Sony Music, WMG and Ticketmaster back ‘Own Our Venues’ campaign

UK charity the Music Venue Trust launched its ‘Own Our Venues’ campaign earlier this year with the aim of raising enough money to buy the freeholds of independent music venues, and thus safeguard their futures.

Yesterday it secured some powerful backers from the music industry. They include the UK bosses of Sony Music (Jason Iley) and Warner Music (Tony Harlow) as well as Ticketmaster UK (Andrew Parsons); the Music Managers Forum (Annabella Coldrick); PPL (Peter Leathem); industry body LIVE (Jon Collins); Help Musicians (James Ainscough) and TVG Hospitality (Ben Lovett).

MVT is hoping to buy the freehold of nine venues in a pilot project by the end of this year, and recently extended its fundraising deadline until 31 December accordingly. It’s aiming to raise £3.5m in initial investments, and has so far secured just over £425k on each of the two platforms it’s using: Ethex and Crowdfunder.

So, there’s a way to go to hit its target, but hopefully the latest industry endorsements (and their wallets) will help.
