
Something we missed in our report on Meta’s latest financial results yesterday: CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed a new milestone stat for its Instagram service.
“Instagram has more than two billion monthly actives,” he told analysts in Meta’s earnings call. This isn’t enormously surprising news, it should be noted.
In December 2021 CNBC reported that Instagram had reached this milestone, based on its sources within the company.
It’s just that Meta has now made the figure official, with one eye on chatter within the tech world about Instagram losing ground with younger social-media users due to TikTok’s continued surge (and accompanying marketing splurge).
TikTok announced that it had more than one billion monthly active users in September 2021, but that figure has not been updated since by the company, but will surely have grown.
