Well, TikTok isn’t just trumpeting classical music in its latest promo: it’s celloing it, fluting it and bassooning it for good measure. The social video app is re-promoting its #ClassicalMusic hashtag that it will use to highlight the growing number of classical musicians who are on TikTok.
The company has roped in a couple of big names too. Film composer Hans Zimmer has curated a guest playlist of music that has inspired him, while pianist Lang Lang will be playing a live performance on TikTok tonight too.
Zimmer’s playlist will be promoted to TikTokers through the app’s Sounds page. TikTok noted that the #ClassicalMusic hashtag already has more than 2bn views of videos.
The company has been beating the classical (timpani) drum for a while now too: a challenge using the hashtag in November 2021 notched up more than 734m views.
Then, in July 2022, TikTok released a compilation album with Warner Classics called ‘TikTok Classics – Memes & Viral Hits’, which gave said hits classical reworkings.
This story was amended on 8 November to correct the mistake suggesting Hans Zimmer and Lang Lang would be performing a livestream together. But imagine if they did!
