mqa mqair

We know MQA for its hi-res audio technology that has been adopted by a range of digital music services, hardware firms and broadcasters. Now the company is ready to talk about a new audio codec that it’s been working on.

Its technical name is SCL6 (which would have also been a cracking name for a mysterious rave duo circa 1989) but its go-to-market name will be MQair. Its focus is on better wireless sound over Bluetooth, WiFi and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) connections, including those used by wireless headphones, earbuds and speakers.

Today, the codec has been certified by audio research body Japan Audio Society (JAS) – a stamp of authority that includes the right to use JAS’s ‘Hi-Res Audio Wireless’ logo, which only three other codecs have qualified for.

This, of course, means MQA’s new tech has competition: Sony’s LDAC and Savitech’s LHDC were certified in 2019, while the Fraunhofer Institute’s LC3plus gained its approval today alongside MQA’s SCL6.

“With MQair we can improve the listening experience for many listeners and extend the MQA ecosystem to wireless devices,” said founder and CTO Bob Stuart.
