British Telco Vodafone is making music a key selling point in the latest affordable mobile plan from its Voxi brand. “Unlimited Music, Social Media and 15GB data for only £10 a month,” is the pitch, noting that it works with music streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer and Amazon Music Unlimited.
It’s a six-month introductory deal, and after that “customers can still enjoy Unlimited Music for only £5 a month”.
Wait, what? A popular telco offering half-price music streaming subscriptions? Nope. The terms and conditions explain that what Voxi is offering is “free unlimited data” to use for streaming music. “Subscription fees for music streaming applications… are not included and will need to be purchased separately from the music provider… Unlimited Music provides the unlimited data to enable the streaming.”
In other words, it’s a UK take on US telco T-Mobile’s ‘Music Freedom’ initiative from a few years back.
