Our British readers may remember a time, long before Mariah Carey became the (albeit not legally-official) Queen of Christmas, veteran artist Cliff Richard was a reliable end-of-year singles-chart topper. Could he repeat the feat in 2022 with his new Christmas album, and if so, will the key be… a printed magazine?
This is indeed the hope. The ‘Christmas With Cliff’ album is being released in the usual manner (streaming, download, CD and vinyl) but also in a chart-eligible print magazine format, which will be sold in retailers WHSmith and Tesco. It’s being pitched as a a comeback for CDs in supermarkets, which started to phase the format out in 2021.
Cliff has an unexpected kindred spirit when it comes to magazine albums: Taylor Swift. Formats for her 2017 album ‘Reputation’ included two issues (or ‘volumes’) of a magazine produced for US retailer Target.
