NFTs may all be digital collectibles, but not all digital collectibles have to be NFTs. Look at what Snapchat’s parent company Snap is doing with its new ‘Bitmoji Drop’ feature. It’s about digital fashion items that people can clothe their Bitmoji avatars in within Snapchat.
In a partnership announced yesterday, Snap will be releasing an Adidas ‘Into The Metaverse’ jacket for people to claim. However, it’s not free: it costs 250 ‘Snap tokens’, which can be bought within the Snapchat app (the equivalent dollar cost of the jacket is $2.99). If the promotion works, you can imagine it being expanded to more brands, and perhaps musicians too: another virtual-merch opportunity in the making.
In separate Snapchat news, Snap has been talking about how augmented reality lenses have been doing on its platform. Big stats incoming: “363 million people use our Snapchat camera technology every day… Snapchatters engage with AR experiences an average of 6 billion times per day… there are over 300,000 creators, developers and teams from around the world who’ve built more than 3 million AR Lenses.”
