Hearty congratulations to British artist Raye, who sits atop the latest official singles chart in the UK with her latest release ‘Escapism’.
It’s been a long time coming: in June 2021 Raye famously went public with her frustration at having been “signed to a major label since 2014… and I have had albums on albums of music sat in folders collecting dust, songs I am now giving away to A list artists because I am still awaiting confirmation that I am good enough to release an album”.
Shortly afterwards she split with label Polydor to go independent, licensing her music to Human Re Sources. In October 2022 she released ‘Escapism’, featuring US artist 070 Shake, as the third single from her upcoming debut album, and three months later it’s at number one.
A strong vindication story, then, and it’s also a TikTok story.
The social app hailed her achievement with a blog post noting that multiple sped-up versions of ‘Escapism’ have collectively been used in more than 700k videos.
TikTok also made Raye the face of its #ElectronicMusic campaign in September, and anointed previous single ‘Call on Me’ as its 2021 Song of the Summer, so this is a wider campaign of support from the platform.
And a pointed message to the industry about the power of both sped-up and slowed-down remixes on its app too.
