Meta announced plans to buy VR startup Within – the company behind music-fitness service Supernatural – in late 2021.

However, the deal has been held up by opposition from the US Federal Trade Commission, which wants to block the deal on competition grounds. After the pair faced off in court in December, we have some news: Meta may finally get the go-ahead to buy Within.

That’s according to Bloomberg, which reported that the judge in the case has denied the FTC’s request to block the deal, while giving it a week to decide whether it wants to appeal the decision. The next hearing is set for 7 February, which may be when we find out whether that appeal will happen.

The news emerged as Meta published its financial results for the final quarter of 2022, with its revenues falling 4% year-on-year to $32.17bn. Meta still turned a net profit of $4.65bn, but that was down considerably from its $10.29bn in Q4 2021.

There was a new milestone however: Facebook now has two billion daily active users, up 4% year-on-year. Overall, Meta’s family of services had 2.96 billion daily active people in December 2022.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts that 2023 will be the “year of efficiency” for Meta, mirroring the language used by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek about his company earlier this week.
