Music Ally readers (and, indeed, writers) of a certain age and musical preference still mist over at the mention of ‘C86’.

A compilation cassette released by British magazine NME in 1986 to celebrate the latest generation of indie bands, it famously launched the career of Primal Scream among others.

Anyway, the idea is being revived in 2023 by… NME! The brand lives on in its current largely-online incarnation having been acquired by BandLab in 2019.

Now it has teamed up with audio firm Bose for an homage to ‘C86’ called ‘C23’, although this being 2023, the focus for its release will be as playlists on streaming services.

Who’s on it? 15 emerging artists, who won’t be revealed until 2 March, ahead of the playlists’ release on 15 March.

There will also be a showcase at the SXSW festival that month, where attendees will be able to get their hands on physical cassettes of the compilation, with a vinyl release to follow later in the year. A physical magazine is also being printed for the promo.

The campaign to reform We’ve Got A Fuzzbox and We’re Going To Use It for the SXSW gig starts here…
