The latest music-streaming app is from… the Arizona Lottery?

Do the music streaming and gambling industries make for easy bedfellows? We’re about to find out.

The latest music service to launch in the US comes from an unexpected source: the Arizona Lottery. It’s a music app called The Ultimate Playlist which is being pitched as “a free-to-play mobile app, raffle game, music discovery and song promotional tool”.

Available for Android and iOS devices, it will offer 40 new tracks every day for people to listen to and rate. By using the app, those listeners will be entered into daily cash raffle and jackpot drawings, with $2k of raffle prizes and a $20k jackpot available every day.

It’s stressed that this is a “free, non-lottery game” (the rules on what US state lotteries can do online are strict) which only people aged 18 and older can use.

Rightsholders are partners for the app, although its makers haven’t announced which labels, publishers and artists are on board at launch.
