Arpeggi Labs raised a $5.1m funding round last September to continue developing its web3 music-creation service.
Now we can see how some of that money is being spent: on launching its own samples marketplace called Kits. Call it Splice with a blockchain twist, if you like.
“Kits are digital assets that represent a license to use samples from your favorite artists,” explained Arpeggi Labs in its announcement.
“Holding a Kit in your wallet lets you download the samples on kits.io and serves as permanent, on-chain proof of your license. Done creating with the sounds in your Kit? Sell it on a secondary market and find new samples for your music.”
Buying one of these kits also gives a musician access to a community of others who are using that kit, as well as the artist who created it.
To our shame, Kits was announced last month, but we only spotted it now with a release from an artist called Edwin from the group Prettymuch. You can find his ‘New Age Bedroom R&B’ kit here to get an idea of how it all works.
Selling sample packs as NFTs is a twist on the way these marketplaces traditionally work, although Arpeggi Labs is not the only web3 startup trying this. Wrapping a community around these NFTs that includes access to the samples’ creators is certainly an interesting spin.
