Artist and DJ Blond:ish has launched her latest project: a 14-track compilation called #PlasticFreeParty. As you may have guessed from the name, sustainability is an important part of the release.
The album, which features tracks from Blond:ish and other artists, is a biodegradeable PHA vinyl record that’s made to be compostable – including if it ends up floating in the ocean.
It’s a partnership with startup Evolution Music and pressing plant DeepGrooves, with the pitch that the format’s sustainability doesn’t mean a compromise on its audio quality.
This isn’t just a one-off whim for Blond:ish (aka Vivie-ann Bakos) however. She’s the founder of Bye Bye Plastic, a non-profit foundation created with the mission to “wipe out single-use plastic in the music industry”.
It has signed up thousands of DJs and promoters as supporters, while consulting and running panels at industry conferences.
The record is being sold for $40 from the Bandcamp store of Blond:ish’s label, Abracadabra Records, and there is an NFT for Blond:ish’s track on the album sold through the Sound marketplace too.
