With 12.1 million subscribers on YouTube, the Lofi Girl channel has become one of the biggest brands in chillout music. Now its famous ‘Lofi Girl’ cartoon character has a new companion.
We’re calling him ‘Synthwave Boy’ although as far as we can tell he’s not been officially named yet. He’s the poster boy for a new round-the-clock ‘synthwave radio 🌌 – beats to chill/game to’ stream on Lofi Girl’s channel.
“A brand new character in the Lofi universe,” as the company described him in its announcement tweet. “Get ready to fully immerse yourselves in the new realm of retro-futuristic sounds and join us as we embark on a journey through time and space.”
There are companion ‘Chill Synthwave’ playlists on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer and Tidal.
Those in turn reveal that the bulk of the tracks being played are from two albums – ‘1 A.M Chill Session’ and ‘Astral’ – released through the company’s own Lofi records label. Which at least should ensure no more stream-stopping copyright claims.
Will Synthwave Boy and Lofi Girl be friends? We can only hope so, although while she’s famously a cat person, his windowsill-basking companion is a dog, so who knows…
