To adapt a famous quote from… somewhere in Meta’s corporate history: a billion users isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? Three billion users.
That’s one of the big figures from Meta’s latest financial results. It now has 3.02 billion daily active people using its family of apps: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
That’s up 5% year-on-year as despite its size, the company’s overall audience continues to grow. Its revenues are also growing but at a slightly slower pace: up 3% to $28.65bn in the first quarter of 2023.
During the company’s earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg also offered some new stats on Meta’s use of AI in its products.
“Now, more than 20% of content in your Facebook and Instagram feeds are recommended by AI from people groups or accounts that you don’t follow,” he said.
“Across all of Instagram, that’s about 40% of the content that you see. Since we launched Reels, AI recommendations have driven a more than 24% increase in time spent on Instagram.”
Meta-sceptics may quail at Zuckerberg’s future ambitions though.
“I think that there’s an opportunity to introduce AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful,” he said.
“We’re exploring chat experiences and WhatsApp and messenger, visual creation tools for posts and Facebook and Instagram and ads, overtime video and multimodal experiences as well…”
