Social location service Loopt has been acquired for $43.4m in cash by banking firm Green Dot. Loopt's apps will be shut down in due course, as its team becomes Green Dot's mobile development division.

Loopt is one of the social location mobile firms linking people's location with their friends. Now it's launched a new app, Loops Star, which offers real-world rewards for checking-in at specific retail chains or locations.
