Next Big Sound opens up its Pandora data on artists

Music-streaming service Pandora’s analytics division Next Big Sound is opening up its data, in an effort to give Pandora metrics a higher profile within the music industry.

Until now, artists, managers and labels could see metrics like spins, interactive plays, thumbs ups and station adds for their own artists and tracks, but not others. That’s now opening up.

“In an industry where stream counts are an important measure of an artist’s success, the inaccessibility of this data publicly has meant that Pandora’s important role in many artists’ career trajectories has gone unnoticed,” wrote Next Big Sound senior product manager Dan Wissinger in a blog post.

How can startups and music corporations be better partners? (#midem)

How is cooperation and competition between startups and big corporations in the music industry evolving? That was the topic for a panel session at the Midem conference this afternoon.

The panel comprised Mark Piibe, EVP of global business development and strategy at Sony Music Entertainment; David Hoffman, co-founder of Next Big Sound; Sitar Teli, managing partner at Connect Ventures; and Romain Amblard, acceleration director at NUMA. The moderator was Bluenove president Martin Duval.

Next Big Sound loses its data feed from SoundCloud

One of the headlines from Next Big Sound’s Summer 2015 report was the growth of SoundCloud, with the music analytics firm claiming that monthly plays on the streaming service had nearly doubled from 2.5bn in June 2014 to 4.9bn in May 2015.

Perhaps don’t expect to see that figure updated in the summer of 2016, though. SoundCloud has stopped sharing data with Next Big Sound, citing the latter company’s recent acquisition by streaming radio service Pandora as the cause.

Not that Next Big Sound is keeping this a secret. The company was open about the lapsed partnership in a tweet to a client who’d asked why SoundCloud data was missing from its analytics reports.

“We’re sorry to report that Soundcloud decided to stop sharing data with @nextbigsound last month,” explained the company’s official Twitter account yesterday (18 August).

Next Big Sound tracked a trillion music streams in first half of 2015

Music analytics firm Next Big Sound may have been acquired by Pandora, but for now that hasn’t put the company off its habit of aggregating stats and then publishing them for the wider industry to pore over.

For example, its half-year report, which leads with the claim that in the first six months of 2015 alone, Next Big Sound “tracked more than a trillion online plays” on YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud, Pandora, Rdio, Vimeo and Vevo.
“The number of online plays in just the first six months of the year far exceeds what we tracked in all of 2014, even before the addition of Pandora’s data,” claimed the report. “And social is growing like a weed as well. We tracked close to 14 billion new followers, page likes, and stations added in the first half of the year, already more than three quarters of the total from last year.”

Pandora to buy music analytics firm Next Big Sound

Streaming music service Pandora is buying music analytics firm Next Big Sound, for an undisclosed sum. The personal-radio firm announced plans for the acquisition this afternoon.

“The deal marks the latest step in Pandora’s commitment to become an indispensable partner to the music industry and accelerates its strategy of harnessing data for the benefit of music makers,” explained Pandora’s announcement of the deal.

The acquisition, which hasn’t yet closed, comes a few months after Apple bought Next Big Sound’s rival Semetric and its Musicmetric analytics service. And by the way, those deals mean both of the analytics services used by Spotify to get stats out to labels and artists now belong to companies that are, in different ways, its direct rivals.
